Jayson Callan has been interested in music since he was a young boy living in Port Perry. In 1978 the guitar was everything and he successfully got his parents to enroll him in guitar lessons. Supporting Port Perry's local music store, Irvin Smith Music, Mr and Mrs.Callan decided to purchase a guitar for their son feeling that this would be a good investment. Jayson studied guitar with his teacher Paul Chilco for seven years. In Grade 7 the opportunity to learn another instrument was presented and Jayson chose to learn the trumpet. A year later, wanting to play the drums he took drum lessons and during high school he studied instrumental music and performed in the school's concert bands on percussion and in the Jazz band on guitar. In 1998 he was offered a guitar instruction position at Irwin Smith Music and continued teaching, and played in bands during high school and college.
Jayson graduated from Durham College in 1993 with a Diploma in Operations Management. In 1995 he was approached by Irwin Smith to purchase his music store. In 1997 Callan bought a commercial property and moved the store. Owning and running a music store was tremendous business knowledge and education of the music industry. It was extremely challenging to keep up with the larger music chains so the decision was made to liquidate the inventory and sell and the end of the decade.
In 2001, Jayson was asked to join the team at Long & McQuade in Oshawa as a Sales Associate. He was promoted to Assistant Manager in 2004 when they opened their brand new location on Simcoe Street North. For the nineteen years at Long & McQuade plus the time he had with the Irwin Smith store, Callan is well known and respected throughout the region as he has forged many relationships with musicians, club owners and industry professionals that work and support our local music industry. Not many of us can truly say we love our job but Jayson continues every day in this business serving musicians and music lovers in Durham Region.
